Selling is one of the basic activities of all human beings. It began the moment you dropped from your mother’s womb. Suddenly, you were squeezed out of a warm, comfortable room into a cold, brightly lit, noisy place. You were wet and cold and you didn’t like it. So what did you do? You cried because it was the only thing you knew how to do. It was your first sales pitch. It said in effect, “Hey, I’m cold and wet. Somebody come take care of me.” It worked and you learned lesson number one of life; how to mold your environment to your liking.
Some people are upset if you mention you have something of value to sell. Personally, I want to know if you have a product or service I might like to hear about. If you solicit me and I don’t want it all I need to do is Click off or say, “No. Thank you.”
Every morning of our lives we start by trying to persuade those close to us that we care about them because we say, “Hello”. Speech teachers call this “phatic” communications. It means, I acknowledge you as someone of interest to me. It starts within the family among all significant others; i.e., spouse, roommate, children, etc. As the day goes on you continually try to sell, persuade if you prefer, those with whom you make contact that you have something of value for them. It may be just your opinion about a question or piece of daily news, a way to solve a problem.
Some people claim they don’t sell. They say, “I just come to work, do my job and go home.” Are they claiming that they don’t want their co-workers or boss to know they are performing at or above the job requirements? We all have to do that in order to survive in the workplace. Doing your job well is selling.
I could go on with many examples, but the point of this little potboiler is, You are a seller, all day, every day, as am I and everyone else with whom we make contact. So don’t get upset if someone tries to sell you their opinion, service or product. We are all united in the fight for survival in a difficult world. Stay open to what others have to offer. You might find it useful.
